Day 1 - Newport, Rhode Island
Start your tour with a visit to The Breakers mansion which is the grandest of the Newport summer ‘cottages’ and is also a symbol of the Vanderbilt family’s social and financial preeminence in the turn of the century here in America. Your visit will offer an updated interpretation of its place in American architectural, social, and cultural history. You will see several previously unseen areas where you will hear stories about the Vanderbilt family , their servants and experiences of their day.
Dive deep below the surface for a new Beneath the Breakers Tour. You will explore its depths with a new tour that shows off the technology that helped make the 70 room building state of the art when it was completed in 1895. Explore the underground tunnel, boiler room and basement of The Breakers! You’ll see and learn about the new domestic technology that transformed daily life.
Lunch will be served at La Forge Casino Restaurant which is situated on the grounds of the International Tennis Hall of Fame and overlooks the first grass tennis courts in America. The Crowley family of Newport has owned and operated La Forge for over thirty-five years. The restaurant’s menu, style and friendly atmosphere reflect the Crowley family’s Irish heritage. For your entrée, choose one of the following: Turkey Club, Open Faced Chicken Salad (sweet pickles and celery on a grilled sourdough), Veggie Wrap (roasted eggplant, chickpea mash, feta and fennel on a pita) or the Casino Burger (American cheese, lettuce, tomato and mayo). All entrees will come with Soup, Coffee, Tea, Iced Tea, and Dessert.
