Itinerary
Day 1 - Home - Pittsfield, MA
Today’s journey will have you thinking like a writer…more specifically, you will be thinking like Herman Melville! Head to the Berkshires where you will see what inspired him and you too will be inspired.
Stop for a visit at Arrowhead which was Melville’s home. In 1850, Herman moved his family from NYC to the Arrowhead property. It is here that he farmed and wrote some of his well-known novels. Melville gave the name Arrowhead to his home because of the artifacts that were found during planting season. Partake in a guided tour of the house and a self-guided tour of the grounds.
Enjoy a 3-course lunch at the Country Club of Pittsfield. Prior to the club being built, Herman Melville’s uncle, Thomas Melville, owned the mansion that was used to build the present clubhouse. Today’s lunch will consist of a choice of: Lemon Chicken (Served with a Lemon Butter Sauce) or Baked Salmon (Served with a Maple Mustard Glaze). All entrees will be served with: Baby Spinach Salad (Baby Spinach mixed with Cinnamon and Brown Sugar Roasted Pecans, Apples, Dried Cranberries, Drizzled with Vinaigrette, and Topped with Crumbled Bleu Cheese), Rolls, Butter, Coffee/Decaf, Tea, and Dessert.
Also today, visit the Crane Museum of Papermaking where Melville purchased papers for his writings. Enjoy a guided tour of the museum.
As you travel through Pittsfield, take note of the various mills. Some of these mills are no longer being used. Some of them have been turned into apartment buildings. Having lived in Pittsfield for 13 years, Herman Melville spent some time writing about these mills.
